Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is The Telx Internet Exchange (TIE) ?
A: The TIE is an an Internet exchange point (IX or IXP) or "public peering point" thats allows Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to exchange traffic inexpensively through a common switch fabric usually through on settlement-free basis. By connecting to the TIE facilities ISPs can peer with any other ISP that is connected to same the TIE facility, provided the peeering ISPs reach a bilateral peering agreement.

Q: What is an Internet Exchange Point?
A: An Internet exchange point (IX or IXP) is a physical infrastructure that allows different Internet service providers (ISPs) to exchange Internet traffic between their networks (autonomous systems) by means of mutual peering agreements, which allow traffic to be exchanged without cost. IXPs reduce the portion of an ISP's traffic which must be delivered via their upstream transit providers, thereby reducing the Average Per-Bit Delivery Cost of their service. Furthermore, the increased number of paths learned through the IXP improves routing efficiency and fault-tolerance.

Q: Where is The Telx Internet Exchange in Atlanta?
A ;The Telx Internet Exchange in Atlanta is located at 56 Marietta ST NW, Atlanta, GA 30303. The exchange is in the building's primary 'meet-me' room on the second floor with connectivity in the customer Meet-Me-Area.

Q: Where is The Telx Internet Exchange in Phoenix?
A: The Telx Internet Exchange in Phoenix is located at 120 East Van Buren Street, Phoenix, AZ 85004. The exchange is in the building's primary 'meet-me' room on the basement floor.

Q: Who can I peer with?
A: Potentially, you can peer with any of the ISPs that are participants of the same TIE facility. However, you must contact each prospective peering ISP to verify that you meet its peering policies.

Q: What do I need to peer at TIE?
A: The ISP must provide for the following:

  • A border router to connect to the port on a TIE switch
  • Somebody who can configure the border router
  • An exchange point IP address for the border router
  • An Autonomous System Number (ASN) to identiy the ISP
  • A bilateral peering agreement with each of the peering ISPs (most often this is a verbal or "handshake" agreement)

Q: Where do I get an IP addresses?
A: Telx manages our own IPv4 Address allocatons. Once you have an IPv4 address, your IPv6 address is based on your IPv4 address where the "last-octet" is the decimal equivalent of the last octet of your IPv4 allocation. For example: IPv4 198.32.132.254 corresponds to IPv6 2001:478:132::254 out of the 2001:478:132::/64 subnet.

Telx Internet Exchange IP Addresses
City IPv4 Subnet IPv6 Subnet
Atlanta 198.32.132.0/24 2001:478:132::0/64
Phoenix 198.32.186.0/24 2001:478:186::0/64

Q: How do I contact TIE Network Operations?
A: Email tietelx.com and if an emergency call (404) 325-2714.

Q: What connection types and speeds are available?
A: You can connect via copper or fiber.  Available speeds are 1Gbps, Nx1Gbps, 10Gbps and Nx10Gbps via single more fiber only

Q: What is the cost of connecting to the TIE?
A:

  • Singlemode Fiber GigE Port - $1800 NRC + $900 MRC
  • Singlemode Fiber LR 10GigE Port - $10000 NRC + $1800 MRC
  • Any third party cross connect fees are the responsibility of the connecting party not Telx.
  • NRC = Non Reoccuring Costs
  • MRC = Monthly Reoccuring Costs
  • All prices are in US Dollars.

Q: Is there an AUP?
